Keywords:I-Ching, philosophy, Luan Tou, Li Qi, Shui Fa, analysis, siting and orientation
This thesis has researched applying the writing of I Ching–the utmost of China’s divine classics, and the metaphysics of geomancy, integrating with the “personal insight" of Confucian, Taoist and Buddhist sages into the lucks in life, to investigate the mysterious and true meanings of universe’s million beings. The intention, also goal, of this thesis is to revive Chinese traditional culture, to celebrate the universe’s immense and profound virtue of creation, to promote the past sages’ view in heaven, to inspire mankind’s conscience and abilities, and to restore the long existed ethics and morals—literally to achieve valuable guidelines for reinforcing peace and justice as well as securing individual life. It is hoped, through I Ching and signs of the diagrams, the art of prophecy to realize how the questions of geomancy, including those of Feng Shui come about.
In the enormous and complex systems formed over thousands of years in China in particular, and in the activities, inherited from ancient times, of founding a state capital, locating principal cities, and giving towns and landscape layout, and in the construction of both Yin Zhai and Yang Zhai (Houses and Graves) as well, theories of geomancy have always been seriously taken. Yet, unclearness and doubt about geomancy have accompanied. This thesis unravels these existed unclearness and concept that takes Feng Shui as superstition, by proving with massive data among documentation, certifying with modern sciences, and analyzing each kind of relevant information; and unties them to transform into a scholarship. It is a scholarship combined with theories and practice of modern architecture to serve as the “art” of geomancy.
The method of this thesis has adopted its principles from the profound theories of all schools such as I-Ching, Luan Tou, Li Qi, Landscapes, House and Grave, San Ho, Jiu Xing, Xuan Kong, Qian Kwun Guo Bao Shui Fa, and Four seasons of Tien Xing Na Jia. At first stages deliberation was defined to inquiring into literatures, followed by a series of examining materials in related documents dessert . Field survey and studies too have been done to properly make the research integral; the system operation is oriented to sorting, analysis and inducing a basis for the thesis research. Also rearranged is a completely logical version of “I-Ching philosophy based geomancy”, which draws up standards for modern geomancy. In such way the ancient inventions are re-implemented—that is, “former substance and latter function united as one” to achieve the aim of thorough enlightenment.
The techniques such as Lung (the Dragons), Sha (the Sands), Xuei (the Caves), Shui (the Waters), House and Grave and Li Qi, and I-Ching were cross-referenced mutually to classics and documentation, with natural laws applied, substantiated by human sciences, and with classics cited, to unveil layers of mystery one by one. The resulting work of this thesis contains formula, rhymed instructions, examples and diagrams, all brief and specific as well as easy to understand, so as to encourage proper and ample use, further to transcend to the ultimate quest. Yet, it is only continuously passing down the orthodox I-Ching and the Five Arts as “Be both capable and moral” suggests, by all people, with no racial or religious discrimination, dedicated to truth seeking, that can be eternal. This thesis being a composing task of considerable hardship is consequently used as a code of I-Ching philosophy based geomancy, and to provide a reference for the same devoted researchers hereafter.
